Introduction
Giganet provides fully managed and proactively monitored routers for all leased line & MPLS PWAN services, including our ELITE fibre leased line services.
These routers allow us to set a demarcation point in the customer's premise that allows us to better support and ensure performance that reflects the service that a leased line affords.
You can learn more about why we provide the routers in this article: Giganet managed Juniper router for ELITE services - Additional information on what these do
Router Hardware Options
The router for a customer's connection is dependant on:
- The bandwidth (speed) of the circuit
- The backup option(s)
- Future proofing for any upgrades in bandwidth later
- Resilience requirements

Future-proofing the router in case of upgrades or added resilience
The matrix above shows the default as well as optional choice depending on the connections specification (e.g. the speed of the primary circuit and whether there is a backup circuit).
If customers wish to future-proof their router choice, please discuss your future-proofing ideas, and we'll recommend a suitable alternative configuration. The particular option depends on the type of set up and design you are opting for.
Example Future Proofing Alternate Options
- If you have a 1 Gb/s on 1 Gb/s leased line and subsequently wish to add a backup FTTC broadband failover at a later date, then you will need a SRX340 router as the EX3200-C-12T does not support backup connections.
- If you have a 500 Mb/s on 1 Gb/s leased line and then wish to upgrade to a full 1 Gb/s on 1Gb/s, then either the EX2300-C-12T or SRX340 would be a good choice. The latter SRX340 if you decided to add a backup connection too. The SRX300 can only support 800 Mb/s of IMIX packet size routing.
High Availability HA Options
If customers do not wish for the router to be a single point of failure, especially if there are two diverse Giganet connections supplying the service, then two routers can be configured. An extra charge will be applied for a second router, and applicable monthly charges will cater for the added management and support.
We can support both standards-based VRRP or Juniper's proprietary cluster mode for the HA. If the two routers are alongside each other, then we recommend the cluster mode, if the routers are in different locations, then VRRP is usually best.
HA is only available with the SRX300 series devices.

Backup ADSL2/FTTC/G.Fast
If customers require a backup xDSL based service alongside their leased line, then we need to also provide a modem that converts the broadband signal to an Ethernet connection which the Juniper routers can support. Although the SRX340 router can support a ADSL2/FTTC PIM module, we do not use this as this module has not been approved by Openreach's MCT (modem certification test). A Juniper SRX300/340 series router is required for backup xDSL services, the EX2300-C is not supported.
Therefore Giganet uses a Technicolor modem to connect between the DSL connection and the Juniper router.
MPLS router support
All routers that support our Managed Internet Access (MIA) services also support MPLS PWAN services. A different router is not required. If customers require backup xDSL, then the standard Zyxel VMG1312-B10A modem is used too.
